Scotland's first Seaweed Fermenter arrives in FlexBio

IBioIC’s FlexBio facility recently took delivery of Scotland’s first seaweed fermenter. With this new piece of kit installed, we will be able to help Scottish companies demonstrate that lab-scaled seaweed fermentation can work when transferred to process scale equipment.

The fermenter was funded by the Scottish Government’s Marine Fund.

We can’t tell you about this and not do a bit of geeking out, so for those interested, the system is a five litre fermenter from InforsHT. It’s capable of solid-state and conventional fermentation. Aerobic and anaerobic gas flow is controlled using air, and N2 MFC, DO, pH, temperature, and stirring, with a range of niche impellers (anchor/single & double helix, pitched blade and fork).
