SynBioBeta's Thought Leader Breakfast

SynBioBeta kicked off 2023 by hosting the annual SynBioBeta Thought Leadership CEO’s Breakfast, an invite-only event hosted at Swissnex in San Francisco. This year Dr. John Cumbers, SynBioBeta Founder & CEO, was joined by Vinod Khosla, Co-founder of Sun Microsystems and the founder of Khosla Ventures, and Renee Wegrzyn, recently named by President Biden to lead ARPA-H, the multi-billion dollar DARPA-style agency created to fund healthcare moonshots.

Vinod Khosla entrepreneur, investor and technologist, shares his thoughts on industry innovations.

“I've always been deep in any area of tech; I'm a tech geek. I have found when axes of innovation come together a lot of change is possible, you're limited not by what you can do, but by what you think you can do.”

Dr. John Cumbers asked “What are the axes of innovation around biology that you are particularly excited about right now?”

“I am really interested in AI, you know, if you can determine the structure of each protein, you can design things. This is such a large innovation that most people in biology have not fully grasped yet. The idea that you could actually design protein structures with AI, then recode them into production, that is pretty exciting.”

The CEO breakfast was a great opportunity to network with various leaders in the synbio industry in a small intimate setting. All of the folks that are driving innovation and deploying capital in the space are in one room.

As a technophile, that interview was one of the most inspiring things I have ever attended. I didn’t realize the breadth of what he was aiming to tackle.

SynBioBeta’s CEO Breakfast was a great way to start the day by hearing the thoughts of two prominent industry leaders on the bioeconomy, healthcare, and investments therein.  The event also provided a welcome and targeted opportunity for business leaders and policymakers to network and exchange ideas.
